Dev Diary: UV Irradiation
Hi! Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do on the Raft Survival team?
Hi! My name is ZeVS, and I'm one of the game designers on the project. My main job is to design and balance game mechanics. Essentially, I make sure the game stays fun and engaging, without becoming overwhelming. Every new feature should bring something fresh — whether it's emotion, strategy, or a new survival twist.
In version 2.5.3, you introduced UV exposure. How did that idea come about?
Honestly, we've been thinking for a while about how to strengthen the "survival atmosphere" in the game. We already had hunger, thirst, enemies, and the constant threat of sharks, but we wanted to make surviving under the sun feel more realistic. UV radiation isn’t just fantasy — it's a real threat, especially out in the open ocean. So we thought, "Why not make the sun an actual enemy?"
We also wanted to introduce a mechanic that ties into tactics — players now have to plan when to use protection and even what items to bring when exploring islands.
How does the UV exposure mechanic work in the game?
During the day, your character is now exposed to sunlight. If you stay out in the sun too long without protection, you'll start to overheat and get sunburns. This affects health and other player stats, making survival much harder.
To avoid this, you need to use special sun protection items. The ingredients for crafting them can be found while exploring islands, earned as rewards, or purchased. We’ve also reworked the armor system to include a sun protection stat. Picking the right gear has become part of your survival strategy.
Does this make the game harder?
Our goal isn’t to make the game harder, but deeper. The UV mechanic isn’t meant to constantly annoy players — it only becomes an issue if you ignore it. And if you choose your gear wisely, you can always reduce your exposure.
We’ve also added additional tutorials to help players quickly understand how sun protection works and how to avoid problems.
What tips would you give to players?
- Watch the UV indicator. It tells you when it’s time to apply protection and when to reduce exposure to avoid negative effects.
- Always carry sun protection. It’s now an essential part of survival.
- Use protection wisely, especially during peak sunlight hours. There’s no UV threat at night.
- Plan your movements. Sometimes it’s smarter to delay a task than to risk sunburn while doing it.
Will you expand on this mechanic in the future?
Yes! We already have some ideas, but we won’t spoil them just yet. What matters is keeping the world alive — not just hostile, but logical too.
Thanks! Anything you'd like to say in closing?
